Travelling on public transport: FAQs

How do I plan my journey?

  • Use the Traveline website to check the best options for your travel.
  • Buy tickets in advance so you’re not rushing on the day, and make sure you can access them on your phone.
  • If you’re catching the bus, check whether you can pay by card on the bus or whether you will need cash.
  • Double check the time of your train or bus before you leave and check live departure information.
  • Leave enough time to get to your place of departure and to travel between rail and bus stops if you need to.

What should I do before I set off?

  • Make sure your phone’s fully charged.
  • Tell someone where you’re going and what time you’re expecting to arrive.
  • Check you’ve got your tickets and some cash or a bank card.
  • Make sure you’ve got the name and number of someone you can contact in an emergency on your phone.
  • Download apps like Trainline and UK Bus Checker.

“Use apps like Trainline, Google maps and UK bus checker to help you navigate your journey.”

Who can I ask if I have questions while travelling on public transport?

  • Large bus stations usually have a help desk. Information boards tell you about bus destinations, stops, timetables and location of bus stops.
  • On train platforms, you can ask a guard if you get stuck, or a passenger assistant. You’ll know who they are from their uniform.
  • There may also be a help button you can press for advice.
  • Don’t forget to check the Trainline or UK Bus Checker app for the location of bus stops, destinations and live travel information.

What if I’m scared or worried about something while I’m travelling?

  • Speak to a member of staff
  • Call or text 61016 to report anything you’re worried about to British Transport Police.

What do I need to know about keeping safe around the railways?

  • Never run across a level crossing when the barriers are coming down.
  • Never trespass on the line where you’re at risk of electrocution.
  • Stand behind the yellow line to avoid being pulled onto the track by fast-moving trains.
  • Pay attention to the gap between the train and the platform when getting on and off a train. Don’t be distracted by looking down at anything like your phone or a book.

“Always remain aware of your surroundings – don’t be distracted by putting all your attention into your phone.”

– Nev, youth worker
