Keshav’s story

Eight-year-old Keshav* enjoys school, where his favourite lesson is Hindi. “I love listening to the poems the teacher recites,” he says.

But, until recently, Keshav was one of the roughly 13 million children in India not attending school.**

Instead, with his father earning only a very basic wage, Keshav spent long days collecting rubbish to supplement his family’s income. Like so many of the families we work with, the time and energy it took to make ends meet left little space for education.

It’s in the bag

But through supporting Keshav’s family and helping his parents understand the importance of education, alongside providing him with a school bag filled with everything he needed to learn, we were able to help Keshav enrol in school.

Today Keshav is making friends and learning new skills. But, just as importantly, his self-esteem is boosted as he plans for a future where education provides a way out of poverty.

And, just like every other schoolchild around the world, he’s making sure his school bag contains all the essentials he needs. But across India, many more children like Keshav are still out of school and still waiting for a school bag to open up their future.
